Asda is expected to release its latest trading update on Friday, 28 August 2026. This follows the discount retailer posting a £989m pre-tax loss for the year to December 2025, with revenue decreasing by 3.6 per cent to £25.9bn.
Allan Leighton, who returned to lead Asda's turnaround in November 2024, is hoping to demonstrate progress. The supermarket has been cutting jobs, including at its head office in Leeds, in an effort to reduce costs and address market share declines.
Asda's net debt reportedly fell from £4.1bn to £3.5bn over the past year, though this remains a significant burden. A spokesperson for Asda stated that recent Worldpanel data shows its market share at an unchanged 11.5 per cent, with sales dipping by 0.2 per cent in the year to August. They described this as Asda's strongest performance since March 2024.
The grocer is facing increased competition from discounters Aldi and Lidl, who have set new standards for low prices. Asda's non-food lines, such as its George clothing range, account for approximately 14 per cent of its overall turnover and are seen as a bright spot.
