Hollywood actor and seasoned investor Ashton Kutcher is embarking on a new venture, stepping away from Sound Ventures, the firm he co-founded over a decade ago with Guy Oseary. He is partnering with Morgan Beller, a prominent figure in the venture capital world, to establish a new firm dedicated to early-stage investments. The move, initially reported by the Wall Street Journal, marks a significant shift in Kutcher's investment strategy, focusing on the foundational layers of emerging technologies.
Morgan Beller brings a wealth of experience to the partnership, having most recently served as a general partner at seed-focused VC firm NFX. Her career also includes a notable tenure as a partner at Andreessen Horowitz and a key role in co-leading Meta's cryptocurrency project, Libra. While the name of their new firm remains undisclosed, the collaboration signals a potent combination of celebrity influence and deep industry expertise.
Kutcher's departure from Sound Ventures does not appear to be a reflection of performance issues at his former firm. Sound Ventures has a strong track record, having made early and successful investments in high-profile companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Brex, and Gusto. Instead, the separation is reportedly driven by differing investment philosophies, with Sound Ventures increasingly favouring more established companies, while Kutcher and Beller are keen to back very early-stage startups.
The new firm's investment thesis will concentrate on AI infrastructure, energy, and deep tech startups. This strategic focus targets companies built around fundamental scientific and engineering breakthroughs, rather than solely software-driven ventures. This approach suggests a belief that the next wave of significant returns will come from the underlying technologies that power the burgeoning AI landscape, rather than the more visible applications built upon them.
The shift is particularly noteworthy given Kutcher's long-standing connections within the tech world, including his relationship with OpenAI's Sam Altman, whom he has known since Altman founded Loopt years before the creation of ChatGPT. Despite his departure, Kutcher will continue to serve as an adviser to Sound Ventures, and in turn, Oseary and Sound general partner Effie Epstein will advise Kutcher and Beller's new firm, indicating an amicable and collaborative separation.
