A family in Atherton, Wigan, safely escaped a house fire on Monday, 27 July, which started in the kitchen of their home on Thomas Street. Derek Smith, 30, whose wife and 12-year-old daughter were at home when the blaze began, said they were fortunate to have made it out alive along with their five cats.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that four fire engines attended the incident, which occurred shortly before 11:30 BST. Mr Smith described the day as "one of the most tragic days of our lives," noting that nothing from the house was salvageable.
The family has since moved into a nearby hotel, receiving support from Wigan Council. Mr Smith, a mental health volunteer, expressed gratitude for the community support received since sharing his story.
