Medal ceremonies at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham were postponed on Saturday after a man was arrested on suspicion of fraud. Transport at the Alexander Stadium tournament was also suspended due to the arrest and necessary security procedures.
A West Midlands Police spokesperson confirmed that a man in his 30s remains in custody for questioning. The six medal ceremonies, scheduled between 22:00 and 23:00 BST after the final event, were cancelled.
Spectators reported being held outside the venue for over an hour after the event concluded, with a significant police presence. Tournament organisers stated that transport operations returned to normal in the early hours of Sunday. Birmingham 2026 acknowledged the delays and thanked attendees for their patience.
More information regarding the postponed medal ceremonies is expected to be released later.
