Australian software giant Atlassian has released a suite of AI agent coordination tools for its widely used Jira project management platform, the company announced today. The new features allow AI-driven agents to automatically assign tasks, update statuses, and flag dependencies across teams, reducing the need for manual project tracking.
The update, which is rolling out to Jira Cloud customers immediately, marks a significant step in integrating generative AI into day-to-day development workflows. Atlassian said the agents can be configured to handle routine handoffs—such as moving a ticket from 'in development' to 'in review'—based on predefined rules or natural language prompts.
Industry analysts noted that the move aligns with a broader trend among enterprise software vendors to embed AI capabilities into core products. 'This is about reducing friction in the software development lifecycle,' said a technology analyst at Gartner. 'Atlassian is betting that teams will pay a premium for automation that saves time on low-value administrative tasks.'
For UK businesses that rely on Jira—particularly in the tech, financial services, and public sectors—the tools could help accelerate project delivery timelines. However, the company has not disclosed pricing changes for existing subscribers, though enterprise customers may need to purchase additional AI add-ons.
The launch comes as Atlassian faces increasing competition from Microsoft and Monday.com, both of which have introduced AI-powered project management features in recent months. Atlassian shares traded higher on the news in Sydney-listed trading, though the company does not have a direct FTSE listing.
