Myanmar's detained former leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has met with a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The aid organisation confirmed the meeting, which took place on Monday, 3 August 2026.
The visit by Arnaud de Baecque, the ICRC's resident representative to Myanmar, was also announced by government spokesperson Khine Khine Soe via Telegram. Photographs provided by Khine Khine Soe showed Aung San Suu Kyi, dressed in traditional Burmese attire, with Baecque in a sparsely furnished room.
The ICRC stated that the visit was conducted according to its standards for people deprived of liberty, including a private conversation with Aung San Suu Kyi. Observations and recommendations from the visit will be shared confidentially with the detaining authorities.
Questions about the 81-year-old's wellbeing and whereabouts have persisted since the military coup in February 2021, which ousted her elected civilian government. Her son, Kim Aris, had recently called for proof of life amid speculation.
Authorities stated in late April that Aung San Suu Kyi had been moved to house arrest following a military-engineered election. However, an image shown on military-controlled TV was dismissed by Aris as being years old.
