Indigenous Australian boxing great Tony Mundine has died at the age of 75. The father of former boxer and NRL star Anthony Mundine succumbed to a heart attack on Sunday.
Born in Baryulgil, near Grafton in northern NSW, Tony Mundine made history as the first Australian to fight in four different weight divisions. His career included a challenge for the world middleweight title in 1974 against Carlos Monzon, a bout that was stopped in the seventh round.
Mundine leaves a significant legacy in the sport. His son, Anthony Mundine, was an IBO middleweight and WBA super-middleweight world champion, and his grandson, Rahim, recently secured his fourth professional boxing victory. Anthony Mundine posted a tribute on social media, expressing his grief and stating he was returning home for the funeral.
Throughout his career, which spanned the middleweight, light-heavyweight, cruiserweight, and heavyweight divisions, Tony Mundine achieved an impressive record of 80 wins, with 64 by knockout, 15 losses, and one draw.
