Australia's Coalition has announced plans to reduce net overseas migration to below 180,000 annually over the forward estimates. This reduction would involve cutting family and international student visas, aiming to increase housing supply.
Shadow housing minister Andrew Bragg is expected to state that the opposition intends to streamline the 2000-page national construction code, which he claims makes it "illegal to build a cheap safe house," into an 80-page "basic Australian standard." Bragg also suggests that a government-overseen shortfall of 130,000 dwellings could be addressed if net overseas migration falls below 180,000 over four years.
However, shadow treasurer Tim Wilson has not committed to the 180,000 net overseas migration target. Speaking to News24, Wilson advised against assuming the figure, stating that the Coalition has not yet made an announcement about its next election strategy.
