Australia's Fair Work Commission has ordered Victoria University to permit a 63-year-old student adviser, Michele Duffy, to work from home one day a week. Ms Duffy sought approval for two days of remote work, arguing that a reduced commute would lessen physical fatigue and enhance her productivity.
The university had denied the request, stating that Ms Duffy's role required face-to-face interaction with students. While the commission acknowledged the business merit of the university's claim, it mandated one day of remote work without requiring Ms Duffy to provide medical proof.
This decision, made last week, contrasts with a ruling in July where the commission rejected a similar request from Steven Polak, a 55-year-old council employee. Mr Polak had sought to reduce his office days from two to one, citing work-related fatigue exacerbated by his commute.
