A chilling discovery has shaken a popular tourist destination in Thailand. The body of 17-year-old Tunchanok Donhomla, who went missing just days earlier, was found in a suitcase near railway tracks in Pattaya City. Her father, Thongchai Donhomla, described his daughter as "resourceful and always helped me," highlighting the devastating impact on her family.
The police investigation led to the arrest of 46-year-old Australian man Simon Peter Carman at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport on Friday evening. Mr Carman has been charged with murder, concealing a corpse in an attempt to hide the cause of death, and the abduction of a minor for indecent purposes.
During questioning, Mr Carman claimed that what occurred was "out of my control," and expressed sorrow for the family's loss. However, local Thai media have reported that the alleged crime stemmed from a disagreement over money, with some reports suggesting Mr Carman claimed self-defence following a struggle.
CCTV footage obtained by police shows Mr Carman and Ms Donhomla together in a condominium lobby on Thursday morning. Later footage allegedly depicts Mr Carman dragging a suitcase out of the building before returning without it shortly afterwards.
Under Thailand's criminal code, a conviction for murder can carry a severe penalty, ranging from 15 to 20 years' imprisonment, or even the death penalty. Mr Carman remains in custody at Pattaya City court and awaits his next court appearance, which has yet to be scheduled.
The case highlights concerns about crime affecting tourists and locals alike in Thailand's popular tourist destinations. As the investigation continues, the community is left to grapple with the tragic loss of a young life.
