Victorian independent MP Helen Haines is in critical condition after an alleged car attack on Monday. The incident occurred at 3:35 pm outside her electorate office, where she was reportedly unpacking a car. A man, understood to be known to authorities, allegedly struck her with his car after completing a U-turn.
Earlier on Monday, Ms Haines had been at the opening of a dog park in Mansfield, engaging with locals in her northern Victorian electorate.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the government will act on advice from security officials following the incident. He also revealed that recorded threats against politicians exceeded 1,067 last financial year, leading to an increase in office holders requiring close personal protection.
A review of politicians' offices last year indicated a significant rise in politically motivated hostility, with 85% reporting high levels of abusive or violent behaviour from constituents, including verbal threats, intimidation, spitting, and throwing objects.
