Avanti West Coast has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to grant free summer rail travel to vulnerable families across the UK. In a pioneering move for the rail industry, the programme pairs Avanti West Coast with the Family Holiday Charity to offer much-needed breaks to those facing significant challenges.
The scheme specifically targets families struggling with financial hardship, recent bereavement, caring responsibilities, insecure housing, and domestic abuse – all issues that can make it impossible to plan a family holiday. With Avanti West Coast's extensive network connecting London to Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as serving the West Midlands and north-west England, these families will have access to idyllic seaside destinations and picturesque towns along the way.
Kathryn O'Brien, customer experience director at Avanti West Coast, expressed pride in the initiative, highlighting its potential to bring joy and respite to families who might otherwise miss out. "We're proud to offer this opportunity for families to create lasting memories and reconnect with one another," she said, noting that the route offers a unique chance for families to experience new places and make lasting connections.
The Family Holiday Charity plays a vital role in identifying eligible recipients, relying on referrals from professionals such as social workers and NHS staff. Rob Parkinson, chief executive of the charity, stressed the significance of this programme – particularly for families who have never experienced a holiday or travelled by rail before. "Our mission is to provide new experiences and opportunities for making enduring memories," he said.
The pilot project will initially support six families with their summer holiday travel. This initiative comes as part of broader government efforts to alleviate cost-of-living pressures, including the 'Great British Summer Savings' package announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves – which includes a temporary VAT cut on attractions, cinema tickets, restaurant meals, and more at participating venues such as Alton Towers, Legoland, Odeon cinemas, McDonald's, and Greene King pubs.
