Avanti West Coast has launched a groundbreaking initiative offering free train travel to vulnerable families this summer, helping to provide much-needed breaks for those struggling. In collaboration with the Family Holiday Charity, the railway operator will be providing complimentary tickets on its extensive West Coast Main Line, connecting London with major cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh.
The scheme's eligibility criteria include financial hardship, bereavement, significant caring responsibilities, insecure housing, and domestic abuse - issues that can make it impossible for families to afford a holiday. The initiative aims to offer respite and new experiences to those who might otherwise be unable to take a break.
Avanti West Coast's customer experience director, Kathryn O'Brien, expressed the company's strong commitment to the programme, highlighting their pride in helping families access holidays they wouldn't normally afford. Many picturesque towns and seaside destinations along the West Coast Main Line are poised to become idyllic locations for creating lasting memories.
Rob Parkinson, chief executive of the Family Holiday Charity, echoed this sentiment, noting that many of the families supported by his charity have never experienced a holiday or travelled by train together. He underlined the importance of providing new experiences and opportunities for making enduring memories as part of their mission, expressing excitement about the summer pilot project.
Avanti West Coast has confirmed it will initially support six families with summer holiday travel, describing this as a pioneering effort within the rail industry. This initiative coincides with broader government efforts to alleviate cost-of-living pressures, including Chancellor Rachel Reeves' 'Great British Summer Savings', which includes a temporary VAT cut on prices at various attractions and venues.
