Families are now able to apply for financial support to help with the expenses associated with the upcoming school year. The Back to School Bonus scheme offers a one-off payment of up to £150, designed to assist with the purchase of essential items such as uniforms and stationery for children from reception up to Year 11.
The funding initiative, initially announced by the previous government in April, targets parents who are not currently receiving income support and whose combined household income is £75,000 or less. The scheme aims to alleviate some of the financial burden on families facing ongoing cost-of-living pressures as they prepare their children for the new academic term.
Under the scheme, a payment of £100 is available for each primary school child, while secondary school children are eligible for a higher amount of £150. Parents who receive income support will not need to submit an application, as their bonus will be automatically processed and paid into their bank accounts during August.
For eligible families wishing to apply, the deadline for submissions is Friday, 31 July. Successful applicants can expect to receive their payments in August, providing timely assistance before schools reopen. This financial aid is a direct response to the rising costs of everyday living, which have made it increasingly challenging for many households to cover necessary expenses.
The government stated that the fund was specifically created to support families grappling with the broader economic climate. By providing direct financial assistance, the scheme hopes to ensure that children have the necessary equipment to start the new school year on an equal footing, regardless of their family's financial situation.
