Italian cyclist Davide Ballerini has claimed victory in stage six of the Giro d'Italia, narrowly avoiding a treacherous late pile-up on the wet cobbles of the Naples course.
The stage, which had already seen several riders fall victim to the treacherous conditions, claimed a number of high-profile favourites, including several of the overall contenders.
Ballerini, riding for the XDS-Astana team, demonstrated exceptional skill and composure as he expertly navigated the final metres, emerging unscathed from the chaos to claim the stage win.
The Italian rider has been in impressive form throughout the Giro, and his victory in Naples will have boosted his chances of a strong overall finish.
The Giro d'Italia continues on 17 May, with stage seven set to take place in the Italian city of Foggia.
