USA striker Folarin Balogun has admitted that President Donald Trump’s intervention to overturn his World Cup suspension caused considerable controversy and created an atmosphere of unease among his teammates. Balogun, who plays professionally for Monaco, received a red card during the United States’ round-of-32 clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina, but the one-match ban was subsequently suspended for a year by FIFA’s disciplinary committee, allowing him to feature in the USA’s last-16 defeat by Belgium.
Speaking to CBS, Balogun reflected on the situation, stating, "My initial reaction was I was happy to be back in the team, but when I kind of started to reflect, I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy, and I could almost see within my team-mates a bit of nerves, because it’s something that is so unique." He added that despite his efforts to focus, "it was difficult. A lot of outside noise, and that’s hard to avoid." Balogun, an Arsenal academy product, continues to maintain that the red card for his challenge on Tarik Muharemovic was an incorrect decision.
The incident has drawn significant criticism. Human rights organisation FairSquare lodged a formal complaint with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) this week, alleging that FIFA president Gianni Infantino violated rules on political neutrality through his interactions with President Trump. Mr Trump had publicly acknowledged his personal intervention on Balogun's behalf, given the USA's role as a co-host of the tournament. FairSquare contends that Mr Infantino, who joined the IOC in 2020, has repeatedly breached the Olympic Charter and the IOC’s code of ethics, citing the Balogun affair as the most recent instance.
Further complicating matters, The Times has reported that Mohammad Al Kamali, the disciplinary committee chair, made the crucial decision to suspend the ban unilaterally. This move is reportedly unprecedented in his published disciplinary history, and FIFA has yet to provide any explanation for the suspension of the ban. FairSquare’s complaint outlines five explicit breaches of the IOC’s political neutrality rules, alongside ‘prima facie’ evidence of two additional serious violations directly referencing the handling of the Balogun case.
This is not the first time FairSquare has raised concerns; a similar complaint was filed with FIFA’s ethics committee in December, though no further information has been provided since the organisation confirmed its receipt. The controversy has also garnered international attention, with the Norwegian football federation formally requesting that FIFA’s ethics committee consider FairSquare’s complaint last month. Additionally, on 29 June, fifty Members of the European Parliament wrote to the same committee, urging it to address the serious allegations made by FairSquare. Both FIFA and the IOC have been approached for comment regarding these ongoing allegations.
