Folarin Balogun, the Monaco forward, found himself at the centre of a dramatic World Cup encounter on Wednesday as he propelled the USA into the last 16 with a goal, only to be controversially dismissed later in the match. His third goal of the tournament, just two days shy of his 25th birthday, opened the scoring in the USA's 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
However, approximately 20 minutes after his crucial strike, Balogun received a straight red card. The incident involved a challenge with Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemović near the edge of the penalty area. Balogun's right foot awkwardly made contact with Muharemović’s ankle and calf, leading referee Raphael Claus to review the incident via VAR and deem it violent conduct. The decision sent shockwaves through the US camp, as Balogun had been a standout performer throughout the tournament.
Despite playing with a man disadvantage for a significant portion of the match, the USA secured their first knockout-stage victory in 24 years. Midfielder Malik Tillman sealed the win with a perfectly executed free-kick late in the second half. Bosnia and Herzegovina, even with their numerical advantage, struggled to create meaningful threats against a resolute American defence.
The red card means Balogun will be suspended for the USA's last-16 clash against Belgium on Monday, presenting a significant challenge for head coach Mauricio Pochettino. Pochettino expressed his strong disagreement with the referee's decision in his post-match press conference. "For me it is never a red card," he stated. "Watching after on TV, it was never the intention to step on the player. That was a normal action in football that happened by accident and was never intentional." He added that he felt the 50/50 decisions were not in his team's favour.
US midfielder Tyler Adams echoed his manager's sentiments, suggesting a yellow card would have been a more appropriate punishment. Former English Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg, now a Fox analyst, went further, stating the play should not have even gone to VAR, believing it was a clear accident. Balogun, visibly distraught after the decision, was confirmed by a US Soccer spokesperson to be unable to appeal the suspension, in line with FIFA policy.
