Banana Shortage Hits Australian Supermarkets Due to Cool Queensland Weather

Australia is experiencing a banana shortage in supermarkets, including Coles, Woolworths, and Aldi, caused by cool weather slowing production in Queensland's key growing regions.

  • Cool weather in Queensland has slowed banana production, leading to sparse or very green stock in major Australian supermarkets.
  • Bananas are Australia's most popular fruit, with almost nine in 10 households regularly buying them.
  • The Australian Banana Growers’ Council expects the shortage to correct itself soon as temperatures rise.

A shortage of bananas, Australia's most popular fruit, has impacted supermarket shelves. This comes as the apple season concludes and summer stone fruit is yet to arrive in large quantities.

Cool weather in Queensland's primary growing areas has significantly slowed banana production. This has resulted in major supermarkets such as Coles, Woolworths, and Aldi having limited displays or very green stock.

Woolworths has informed shoppers that recent weather in far north Queensland has slowed banana growth, advising that stock may be limited but fresh supplies are arriving daily. The Australian Banana Growers’ Council anticipates that the shortage will soon resolve as temperatures in affected regions begin to rise.

Despite the supply issues, demand for bananas has remained high. Anton van den Berg, co-founder of Box Divvy, noted that many consumers continue to buy bananas regardless of supply, contributing to the shortages.

What this means for you: If you are in Australia, you may find limited availability or greener bananas in supermarkets. Mangoes are suggested as a potential alternative.
