The tragic events unfolding in Bangkok's nightlife district are sending shockwaves through Thailand and beyond. A devastating fire at Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao bar has claimed 30 lives, with over 70 people injured, including 24 who remain critically ill. The Thai authorities have swiftly initiated an investigation into the cause of the blaze, amid allegations of negligence and a blatant disregard for patron safety.
Initial findings suggest that the inferno started with a short circuit in an air conditioning unit, which subsequently led to a power outage. However, it is believed that the rapid escalation of the fire was exacerbated by the extensive use of highly flammable materials throughout the venue, including plastic flowers on the stage and combustible foam on the ceiling.
Fire safety experts have pointed out that several factors contributed to the tragic outcome. The door near the restrooms, where many victims were found, was locked, while the two main entrance doors were partially obstructed by furniture. Moreover, the lack of illuminated emergency signs led customers to flee away from the stage towards the back of the establishment, further trapping those attempting to escape.
Questions have also been raised about the bar's official registration. Classified as a 'restaurant with live music' rather than an 'entertainment venue', Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao was exempt from using fire-retardant materials in its construction and decoration, a regulation that applies to entertainment venues. Bangkok's Metropolitan Administration has announced a review of these regulations for both types of establishments.
Adding to the concerns, reports indicate that the owner of Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao previously owned another pub in Thailand's Yasothon province that was destroyed by fire in December 2019. While there were no casualties in that earlier incident as it occurred during the day, the recurrence of such a tragedy under the same ownership is likely to be a significant focus of the ongoing investigation.
