Bank of England (BoE) economists Jack Leslie and Rupal Patel have discussed the central bank's operations and the challenges it faces, including an 'uncertain' external environment and increased wholesale energy costs. They explained that electronic payments across the UK are processed through the Bank's 'black box'.
Patel described increasing interest rates as a 'blunt tool' for combating inflation, noting its effectiveness in reducing demand but less so against supply-side shocks. She added that the impact of interest rate decisions on inflation can take 'about 18 months to two years' to materialise.
Leslie also addressed the issue of government debt, which a pressure group estimates has surpassed £3 trillion. He stated that printing more money is not a viable solution for debt, citing the risk of hyperinflation as seen in other countries.
The economists also clarified that any Bank of England banknote ever issued, dating back to 1694, can be exchanged for a modern note of the same value at the Bank. This includes damaged notes, provided more than 50% of the note is present.
