  • Barnet Council conducted evening inspections at 76 properties last week.
  • Legal investigations have been opened into 22 properties for suspected licensing breaches.
  • The council has issued £187,000 in HMO-related fines this year.

Barnet Council has initiated targeted evening inspections across the north London borough to identify landlords operating Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) without the necessary licences. During the first evening of enforcement activity last week, officers visited 76 properties.

Following these inspections, the council has opened legal investigations into 22 properties due to suspected licensing breaches. Barnet Council has already issued £187,000 in fines this year for offences related to HMO licensing and management, with individual offences potentially leading to penalties of up to £40,000.

The council plans to continue these targeted operations across the borough over the next 12 months. Landlords are urged to verify if their properties require a licence and ensure they meet all legal obligations. Letting and managing agents are also advised to check the licensing status of properties under their management, both when taking them on and throughout the management period.

Why this matters: Landlords and letting agents in Barnet face increased scrutiny and potential financial penalties if HMO properties are not properly licensed or managed.

What this means for you: If you are a landlord or letting agent managing an HMO in Barnet, you should ensure your properties are correctly licensed and comply with all management and safety requirements to avoid potential investigations and fines.
