Barnsley launches AI training schemes for jobseekers and career development

Two new schemes have been announced in Barnsley to help residents use AI for job applications, interview preparation, and training for roles where digital and AI tools are becoming integral.

  • The AI Career Launchpad will offer flexible training and paid work placements.
  • The Getting Job Ready with AI pilot will support jobseekers with AI tools for finding work.
  • Barnsley became the UK's first Tech Town six months ago.

Barnsley residents and jobseekers will be able to access practical support for using AI to find work, build confidence, and train for future careers, following the announcement of two new schemes today, 25 August 2026.

The AI Career Launchpad, a partnership with Barnsley College valued at over £400,000, will provide local people with a flexible route into AI-related jobs. Participants will receive six months of training linked to a Level 4 apprenticeship, alongside paid placements to gain experience.

Additionally, from September, jobseekers in Barnsley will receive hands-on support through the new Getting Job Ready with AI pilot. This initiative aims to help individuals who are comfortable with everyday technology to gain confidence in using AI and digital tools for job searching and workplace preparation. Support will include using AI to search for roles, tailor CVs and cover letters, and prepare for interviews.

Why this matters: The schemes aim to help people benefit from AI by training for jobs linked to it and using AI tools for job applications, potentially strengthening local services and supporting economic growth.

What this means for you: If you are a resident or jobseeker in Barnsley, you may be able to access free training and support to use AI for job applications, career development, and gaining new skills.
