Basketball legend LeBron James has confirmed his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers, bringing an end to his eight-season tenure with the iconic franchise. The 41-year-old, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in NBA history, is now set to continue his career with a new team, with media speculation pointing towards the Golden State Warriors as a potential destination.
James joined the Lakers in 2018 and was instrumental in leading them to the 2020 NBA championship, a victory that resonated deeply following the tragic passing of Lakers icon Kobe Bryant earlier that year. His time in Los Angeles also saw him achieve the remarkable feat of playing alongside his son, Bronny, who joined the team in 2024.
In a statement, the Lakers paid tribute to James, acknowledging his immense contribution. "LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history," the club stated, expressing gratitude for his eight years, the 2020 title won "under the most difficult circumstances imaginable," and the numerous records he broke. They extended their best wishes for his future, both on and off the court, affirming he would always be a cherished member of the Lakers family.
James himself responded on social media, writing, "No, THANK YOU!" He described it as a "truly a honor" to wear the purple and gold jersey and strive to continue "the greatness & legacies that came before me!" He added, "Hope I made a few proud during my stint."
Throughout his career, James has consistently set new benchmarks in the sport. He is the NBA's all-time leading scorer and holds the record for most games played with 1,622 appearances. This past season with the Lakers, he averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds. A 22-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion, his career began in 2003 when he was drafted first overall by his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers. He famously left Cleveland for the Miami Heat in 2010, before returning to lead the Cavaliers to their first-ever championship in 2016, overcoming a 3-1 deficit against the Golden State Warriors in the Finals.
