Bausch + Lomb, the Canadian ophthalmic products company, has officially launched its EyeGility intraocular lens (IOL) delivery system in the United States. The device, which received regulatory clearance earlier this year, is intended to give surgeons enhanced control when implanting lenses during cataract procedures. The launch marks the latest addition to the company's expanding surgical portfolio.
According to the company, the EyeGility system uses a proprietary mechanism to allow for smooth, precise delivery of the IOL into the capsular bag of the eye. This is designed to reduce the risk of lens damage or misplacement, which can occur with traditional manual delivery methods. Bausch + Lomb has stated that the system is compatible with its existing range of premium IOLs.
The US market for cataract surgery devices is highly competitive, with major players including Johnson & Johnson Vision and Alcon. Bausch + Lomb’s entry with a dedicated delivery system could help it capture a larger share of the growing demand for premium cataract procedures. The company reported in its latest earnings that its surgical segment saw revenue growth of 5% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026.
For UK ophthalmologists and patients, the launch is noteworthy as Bausch + Lomb products are widely distributed in Britain through NHS supply chains and private clinics. While the EyeGility system is not yet available in the UK, industry observers suggest that a European rollout could follow within the next 12 to 18 months, pending CE marking and regulatory approval.
Analysts at GlobalData have noted that the global IOL market is projected to reach £4.5 billion by 2030, driven by ageing populations and rising rates of cataract surgery. Bausch + Lomb’s focus on improving surgical precision aligns with broader trends in minimally invasive ophthalmology. The company is expected to provide further details on international expansion plans during its next investor call.
