Long-serving BBC Radio London presenter Eddie Nestor has informed listeners that he is stepping away from his programme after receiving a cancer diagnosis. The 62-year-old, known for his distinctive voice and community engagement, shared the personal news in a social media statement, explaining that his health had necessitated a change to his immediate plans.
Nestor candidly revealed that what he had anticipated as a typical June had taken an unexpected turn, leading to him spending significant personal days, including Father's Day and his birthday, in hospital. He confirmed that he has now undergone his initial chemotherapy treatment and expressed profound gratitude for the medical team supporting him. He conveyed a hopeful and optimistic outlook, stating that he and his family are 'looking upward and forward' during this challenging period.
While acknowledging the uncertainty of the coming months, Nestor indicated he plans to work and post on social media when he feels capable, dedicating the rest of his time to regaining his strength. He highlighted his family as his primary source of support and requested encouragement, love, and prayers from his followers rather than sympathy, viewing these as essential 'fuel' for his journey. He also extended thanks to his colleagues at the BBC and those who have already reached out.
BBC Radio London has publicly affirmed its support for Nestor, confirming his temporary absence and sending best wishes from the station and his loyal listenership. Jim Davis and other presenters are expected to cover his show during his recovery. Nestor, who received an MBE in 2018 for his contributions to radio and charity, has been a prominent fixture on BBC Radio London since 2002 and is also recognised for acting roles in television programmes such as Casualty and Death in Paradise.
This marks Nestor's second battle with cancer. He was previously diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2007, a journey he documented through a blog, before announcing his remission in 2012. His openness about his health challenges provides a platform for awareness and encourages public discussion around cancer diagnoses and treatment.
