Rudi Garcia has officially concluded his tenure as head coach of the Belgium national football team, with the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) confirming that his contract will not be extended. The Frenchman departs the role after 18 months, following Belgium's exit at the quarter-final stage of the 2026 World Cup.
Garcia led the Red Devils to the last eight of the prestigious tournament, where they were ultimately defeated by eventual champions Spain. A late error from substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens proved costly in the decisive match against the Spanish side. Despite reaching the quarter-finals, questions had been raised about Belgium's performances throughout the competition, which included unconvincing draws against Egypt and Iran in the group stage.
The Belgians also faced a challenging path in the knockout rounds, requiring a dramatic comeback from two goals down to secure a 3-2 extra-time victory over Senegal in the last-32. They then overcame co-hosts USA, despite facing a disadvantage stemming from the Folarin Balogun saga, to progress to the quarter-finals.
In a statement, the 62-year-old Garcia reflected on his time with the team: "After discussions with the RBFA, we have decided not to extend the excellent journey we have shared over the past 18 months. I leave Belgium in League A of the UEFA Nations League and among the top eight teams in the world." He further thanked his players, sports director Vincent Mannaert, and the fans, expressing his pride in helping to initiate a generational transition within the squad.
Vincent Mannaert, the RBFA's sports director, acknowledged Garcia's contributions. He stated, "Rudi Garcia has unquestionably played a key role in restoring the Belgian Red Devils. He was appointed national coach in a challenging sporting and financial context. Thanks in particular to his commitment and experience, team cohesion was restored and a strong result was achieved at the most recent FIFA World Cup." Mannaert also confirmed that the federation is now preparing for a new cycle, which includes the appointment of a new national coach.
