Royal Ascot 2026 draws to a close today with the challenging Queen Alexandra Stakes at 6.10pm, the longest race of the week. Covering a formidable distance of two miles, five and a half furlongs, the event demands exceptional stamina from its competitors. Amidst a field often dominated by horses with a background in jump racing, Berkshire Sundance has emerged as a compelling prospect for the final race.
Andrew Balding's six-year-old gelding, Berkshire Sundance, enters the race with an impressive record, having secured four victories over two miles. His recent performance, a sixth-place finish in the Chester Cup over two miles and two furlongs, suggested he was not slowing down, indicating that the further step up in distance could unlock additional potential. With seven wins from 17 career starts, Berkshire Sundance is seen as a stout stayer with the capability to perform strongly over this extended trip.
The current favourite for the Queen Alexandra Stakes is Le Destrier, trained by Willie Mullins, who has a strong record in this particular race, having won three of the last five renewals. Le Destrier's credentials include a recent close third-place finish behind Gold Cup hero Scandinavia at Leopardstown, solidifying his position at the head of the market.
Earlier in the day, the Golden Gates Stakes at 5.35pm also features some interesting propositions. Spyce, despite being a longer shot in the betting market, is highlighted as a horse to watch. Trained by Alan King, whose stable has been in excellent form, Spyce finished not far behind the leaders in the London Gold Cup at Newbury last month. Last season, Spyce showed promise by competing in Group company after winning his maiden, achieving fourth and fifth places in two Group Three contests.
Another horse to consider in the Golden Gates Stakes is Princling. Having run a decent race in the competitive Silver Bowl handicap over a mile at Carlisle, where he finished fourth after being outpaced, the step up to ten furlongs is expected to suit him. With Alan King's yard enjoying a successful week, including a winner at Ascot on Tuesday, both Spyce and Princling are anticipated to put in strong performances.
