A significant fire has engulfed a waste facility in Bermondsey, south-east London, with around 100 firefighters deployed to the scene. Fifteen fire engines were called to Landmann Way shortly before 20:00 BST after approximately 50 tonnes of household waste caught fire.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has warned of substantial smoke production and advised local residents to keep their doors and windows closed. The cause of the fire is not yet known, though firefighters previously tackled a blaze at the same facility in June.
Station commander Duncan Rees stated that crews are working hard in difficult conditions, utilising 32m and 64m ladders to tackle the flames from above. Fire crews from East Greenwich, Old Kent Road, Deptford, and surrounding stations are involved in the operation.
The LFB anticipates a "protracted incident" and expects crews to continue working overnight to bring the fire under control. A freelance journalist reported that trains on a nearby Overground track were still passing despite the "thick black smoke."
