England international Beth Mead has officially joined Women's Super League champions Manchester City on a three-year contract, completing a free transfer from Arsenal. The 31-year-old forward, a prolific scorer with 40 goals in 81 appearances for her country, expressed her enthusiasm for the move, stating that Manchester City's playing style was a significant factor in her decision, describing it as a 'no-brainer'.
Mead, who holds the WSL's all-time assist record with 54 contributions, spent nine years at Arsenal before her departure at the end of the recent season. She highlighted the appeal of City's approach to the game, telling reporters: 'The way City plays suits me really well, and I feel like it can get something extra out of my game. Speaking to the manager [Andrée Jeglertz], I thought it was a place where I can really fit in, help and bring a different dynamic to the team, so it was a no-brainer for me.'
Therese Sjögran, Manchester City's director of football, welcomed Mead's arrival, acknowledging her impressive career achievements. Sjögran commented: 'Beth’s achievements in the game speak for themselves, so we’re delighted to bring her to the club. She’s shown what it takes to consistently perform on the kind of big stages we want to regularly be competing at, so she’ll be a brilliant addition to our already impressive squad of players.'
Mead's signing marks Manchester City's first acquisition of the summer transfer window, but she is unlikely to be the only England international to join the club. Manchester City has reportedly agreed a £500,000 deal to bring Niamh Charles from Chelsea, with that transfer also expected to be finalised this month. These incoming transfers coincide with the departure of Spain international left-back Leila Ouahabi, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the month.
The addition of Mead, a player known for her attacking prowess and creative flair, is expected to bolster Manchester City's squad as they aim to defend their WSL title and compete in European competitions. Her experience and ability to perform consistently at an elite level will be a valuable asset to the team's ambitions for the upcoming season.
