Beth Mead has ignited the Women's Super League with a dramatic transfer switch from Arsenal to reigning champions Manchester City, penning a long-term deal that will keep her at the Etihad until 2029. This seismic move promises to electrify City's attacking arsenal and send shockwaves through the competition.
The Lionesses' star forward, now 31, departs north London with a glittering trophy cabinet, boasting a WSL title from the 2018-19 season, last year's Champions League crown, and three League Cup triumphs. Mead's trailblazing career kicked off at Sunderland, where she etched her name into history as the youngest player to bag the WSL Golden Boot aged just 20.
At the international level, Mead has been an indispensable cog in England's machine, earning a staggering 81 caps and starring in two European Championship-winning squads. Her show-stopping display at Euro '22 earned her player of the tournament honours, as well as top scorer with six goals and assist leader with five.
Beaming with excitement, Mead declared: "I’m chuffed to bits to be here! City's incredible season last year was a major draw for me. I believe their style suits my game perfectly – it’s the perfect fit!" She revealed that discussions with the manager convinced her that City was the ideal place to bring new energy and dynamics to the team.
Manchester City's record-breaking previous season saw them secure their first WSL title since 2016, finishing four points clear of Arsenal. Their dominance continued in May, as they claimed a domestic double by thrashing Brighton 4-0 in the Women’s FA Cup final. Director of football Therese Sjogran hailed Mead's arrival as "a massive coup" for City, stating: "Beth’s achievements are simply phenomenal – we're over the moon to welcome her to our fold." She underlined that signing a player of Mead's calibre will enable the club to build on their recent success and maintain their position at the summit.
