CuspAI, a Cambridge-based artificial intelligence startup, has made a groundbreaking £2 billion valuation following a record-breaking £330 million funding round. Backed by high-profile investors including Amazon's Jeff Bezos and the UK government's sovereign AI fund, this young company is on a mission to revolutionise material science with cutting-edge AI technology.
At its core, CuspAI aims to develop an 'intelligent search engine' for rare materials – think iridium and ruthenium – which are crucial components in chipmaking but often hard to come by. This innovative approach promises to slash research times and reduce reliance on these scarce metals, with far-reaching implications for industries from energy to automotive.
But CuspAI isn't going it alone. The company has launched the AI Materials Foundry, a collaborative initiative that brings together over 48 industry giants and research institutions, including Nvidia, Meta Platforms, and Hyundai. Their shared goal is to harness the power of frontier AI – the most advanced general-purpose AI models yet created – to discover new materials that could supercharge energy networks, boost battery performance, and take the semiconductor sector to the next level.
Co-founders Dr Chad Edwards and Prof Max Welling are adamant that their work is urgent. 'The future of industrial progress depends on discovering materials we don't even know exist yet,' they say. To tackle this challenge, CuspAI combines the latest agentic AI techniques with deep domain expertise, exclusive data access, and strong partnerships to drive innovation.
The £330 million investment will fuel CuspAI's international expansion, including a new office in Singapore and increased staffing at its existing locations in Cambridge, Amsterdam, Berlin, Tokyo, and the US. This deal marks the fourth time the UK government's sovereign AI fund has backed a British AI firm – a testament to the country's growing reputation as a hub for AI innovation.
Science and Technology Secretary Liz Kendall sees CuspAI as a prime example of how AI can be used to tackle major global challenges like climate change. 'By harnessing AI to discover new materials, we're not only driving economic growth but also paving the way for breakthroughs that will protect our environment and enhance quality of life,' she notes.
