Billionaire Investor Stanley Druckenmiller Used AI for Wall Street Journal Op-Ed

Stanley Druckenmiller, a billionaire investor, has stated he used artificial intelligence to write a Wall Street Journal op-ed criticising US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

  • Stanley Druckenmiller admitted using AI for his Wall Street Journal op-ed.
  • The op-ed criticised US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's interference in the US bond market.
  • The Wall Street Journal's editorial page editor, Paul Gigot, defended Druckenmiller's piece.

Billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller has confirmed he used artificial intelligence to write his recent Wall Street Journal op-ed. The article sharply criticised US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's involvement in the US bond market, specifically opposing the US treasury doubling the size of its government debt buybacks.

Druckenmiller admitted to using the technology on Tuesday, stating to Notus, "I’m not embarrassed by it." He further defended his choice in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, saying, "At 73 I’m kind of proud of using it." He added that the ideas presented were his own and that he had been speaking about them for over 15 years.

Paul Gigot, the Wall Street Journal’s editorial page editor, defended Druckenmiller, stating that the question for them is whether published contributions reflect an author’s original argument and if the author has the standing and credibility. Gigot noted their long-standing relationship with Druckenmiller and affirmed that his op-ed represented his genuine opinion. He also referred to AI as "a fact of modern life."

This development occurs as the media industry continues to address its guidelines regarding the use of AI. Other instances of AI use in published works include a UC Berkeley math professor using AI to edit an op-ed and the New York Times cutting ties with a freelance journalist over AI-related plagiarism.

Why this matters: The use of AI by a prominent investor for a critical opinion piece highlights ongoing discussions within the media industry about the parameters and transparency of AI integration in content creation.
