Birmingham Airport has revealed a £2bn expansion plan that airport bosses state could more than double passenger numbers and create thousands of jobs. The draft plan outlines the use of existing runway capacity alongside "significantly enhanced" passenger facilities over the next 15 years.
The airport, which saw over 13 million passengers in 2025, aims to increase this to 30 million annually. The proposals are projected to create more than 50,000 jobs, including 3,800 at the airport site.
The first stage of development, which includes investments in baggage and terminal facilities, additional aircraft stands, and surface access improvements, could commence in 2027. Airport chief executive Nick Barton stated that the scheme aims to ensure the airport is "ready for the future" but requires a "fair and stable taxation environment."
An eight-week public consultation has been launched, allowing people to provide feedback online, by post, or at 20 events starting on 16 October in Hampton on Arden. Transport secretary Heidi Alexander said the government is "backing our aviation sector to continue growing, right across the country."
