The Handsworth Baby and Family Bank in Birmingham reports an increase in the number of full-time working parents seeking assistance for essential baby items. Kavita Kaur Dhillon and Karvinder, who operate the bank, stated that while they initially supported low-income households, they are now seeing more working families needing help with daily costs.
The bank provides free items such as nappies, baby formula, clothes, and toys. Kavita Kaur Dhillon highlighted a particular need for everyday essentials, including formula, nappies, wipes, and toiletries, noting that the bank is currently in "desperate need" of baby formula.
Karvinder observed a shift in demand over recent years, with families now requiring assistance with a broader range of day-to-day items as the cost of living has increased. The service, which has been helping families since 2024, is run from within the couple's Dhillons Boutique store, a setup Kavita believes helps to reduce the stigma associated with asking for support.
