Birmingham City Council is set to impose a 20mph speed limit on most roads within the city, with the exception of a few major thoroughfares. This decision is seen as a significant shift in transport policy.
Historically, Birmingham's roads were designed with a strong emphasis on motoring, reflecting its past as a centre for the UK's car industry. However, the city has been gradually moving towards a more pedestrian-friendly environment over the past two decades, including the expansion of its tram system.
The imposition of a city-wide 20mph zone is expected to further accelerate this transformation, prioritising walking, cycling, and public transport over car travel. Similar initiatives have been implemented elsewhere, with Wales restricting all local urban roads to 20mph in September 2023, a measure that has reportedly led to reductions in road deaths and injuries.
