In a garden shed in Birmingham, Leah Courtney transforms cherished garments into comforting keepsakes, creating bespoke 'bereavement bears' for families grieving the loss of a loved one. Since starting her venture in 2023 following the passing of her sister's mother-in-law, Courtney has crafted more than 500 of these unique soft toys, turning a personal endeavour into a full-time business named Made From Memories.
Each bear is meticulously sewn from clothing provided by the families, ranging from dressing gowns and pyjamas to more unusual items like a 1950s wedding dress. Courtney ensures the bears' arms and legs are not fixed, making them suitable for cuddling. Customisation options include embroidered names and messages, and the integration of voice boxes or small vials of ashes, offering a tangible connection to those who have passed.
Courtney emphasises the therapeutic nature of her work, both for herself and for the recipients. She notes that the bears provide a comforting presence, helping families feel as though their loved one is still near. "It warms me because when you lose somebody, it's instant. Their presence isn't there, their smell isn't there and it can sometimes feel that they are just gone," she explained, adding that the bears help bring relatives "back to life for new generations."
A crucial element of Courtney's process is her decision not to wash the clothing. She firmly believes in the powerful link between scent and memory, seeing the preserved fragrance as an integral part of the keepsake's ability to evoke memories. This attention to detail, coupled with the emotional impact of her creations, has led to bears being shipped as far as Spain, with many recipients moved to tears upon receiving them.
Adding a touching final flourish, Courtney's five-year-old daughter has taken on the special role of 'bear hugger'. Before each bear is sent to its new home, the child embraces it, a gesture intended to infuse the keepsake with love. This small act underscores the profound personal investment and care that goes into every bear made, extending beyond the craftsmanship to the emotional well-being of the grieving families.
