A growing number of Black American women are turning to South Korea in search of comprehensive and inclusive healthcare – a trend that highlights the disparities they face within their own country's medical system.
While South Korea is renowned for its advanced cosmetic dermatology and plastic surgery sectors, many visitors are now discovering the country's broader medical offerings, including preventative care, diagnostic screenings, and more affordable access to specialist services than those available in the US.
According to William Ban, co-founder of Himedi, a platform connecting American clients with South Korean health services, there has been a significant increase in requests from Black American women for detailed health check-ups, including gynaecological, thyroid, and cardiovascular screenings.
These requests align with documented health disparities affecting Black women in the US, who experience disproportionately high rates of cardiovascular disease and hypertension – conditions that are often met with delayed diagnosis and treatment. In contrast, South Korea offers one-day health examinations that bundle a range of diagnostic tests into a single visit, providing convenience and thorough investigation of health concerns.
Adzua Agyapon, 36, from Washington DC, credits a comprehensive health exam at a medical centre in Seoul with uncovering a previously undiagnosed fibroid. She praised the friendly and compassionate medical staff, contrasting them with her own experiences in America – where annual check-ups failed to identify the condition despite its severity.
The cost of Agyapon's thorough examination was just under £470 (approximately $600 USD), a fraction of what she would have incurred in the US. While this trend primarily involves American citizens, it serves as a reminder that medical tourism can offer benefits for those seeking specific care not readily available or affordable at home – including UK travellers.
South Korea's advanced medical facilities and services are within reach for British visitors, with direct flights from London Heathrow to Seoul Incheon taking around 11-12 hours.
