A specialist team has begun the unique task of cleaning the glass SkyWalk at Blackpool Tower, working at dizzying heights of approximately 116 metres (380ft). As the summer holiday season gets into full swing, Fylde Coast Cleaners Ltd are ensuring that visitors to the iconic landmark continue to enjoy unobstructed panoramic views.
The cleaners, secured by safety ropes and harnesses, abseil from the top of the tower, a method that allows them to meticulously clean the exterior of the glass SkyWalk. This challenging job provides them with what many describe as one of the most spectacular workplace vistas in the UK, looking out over the Blackpool Promenade, the Irish Sea, and on clear days, as far as the Lake District, Liverpool, and even the Isle of Man.
Damian Vanner, one of the cleaners, described the excitement of working on such a prominent structure. For some, the connection to the tower runs deeper, with cleaner Craig Burt recalling a family history of working on the landmark, albeit with less modern equipment than today's safety gear. Shaun Smith, another team member, expressed pride in working on an iconic building that is synonymous with Blackpool.
Despite the unparalleled views, the work itself is physically demanding and requires constant vigilance. Cleaners must navigate the tower's metalwork, ensuring their safety harnesses are correctly attached and their equipment is secure, all while avoiding injury. The precision and care required for the job highlight the professionalism of the team.
The cleaning operation is a crucial part of maintaining the Blackpool Tower's appeal as a major tourist attraction. The SkyWalk, with its transparent floor, offers visitors a thrilling perspective of the town below, and keeping its glass pristine is essential for the full experience. This ongoing maintenance ensures the tower remains a highlight for the millions of tourists who visit Blackpool each year.
