The family of Anton Green, a British man missing in Colombia, has been told that a body has been found in the search for him. Mr Green, 43, from Manchester, had been living in the South American country for two-and-a-half years and stopped responding to messages in August.
His family in Whalley Range was informed that a body had been discovered, and it is believed to be Mr Green. They told the BBC that the news, which came hours after they renewed an appeal for help, had devastated them.
A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) spokesman confirmed that the body of a British man had been found in Colombia and that support is being provided to the family. Mr Green's family had previously stated that his failure to contact them was out of character.
His mother, Nylva McKie-Williams, said his last words to her in August were "we will speak at the weekend." She also told BBC North West Tonight that he had kept in frequent touch with his family. Footballer Marcus Rashford had supported the appeal to find Mr Green, describing him as a "family friend."
Mr Green's sister, Sian Tuohey, described him as a "happy, decent guy" who spoke fluent Spanish. He had moved to the Fontibon area of Bogota, the capital, not long before contact was lost. His relatives are now awaiting more information from the Attorney General's Office in Bogota.
