A body has been recovered by police searching for a 15-year-old boy who disappeared while swimming in Testwood Lakes, near Totton, Hampshire. The teenager was last seen in the water on Wednesday afternoon, prompting a significant search operation involving police marine units.
The Testwood Lakes nature reserve was evacuated shortly after the boy was reported missing, allowing emergency services to conduct an extensive search of the 150-acre site. Authorities have confirmed that the boy's family has been informed of the discovery, and formal identification has since taken place. A file is now being prepared for the coroner.
The incident unfolded on a day when Hampshire experienced soaring temperatures, reaching up to 36C, under a red extreme heat warning issued for the region. The extreme weather has been linked to a number of water-related incidents across the UK as people sought relief from the heat.
Testwood Lakes, which is owned by Southern Water and managed by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, remains closed to the public, with an urgent appeal for people to avoid the area. The reserve had previously issued a statement expressing its 'extreme concern' regarding the 'serious incident'.
This tragic event adds to a growing number of water deaths reported across the country amidst this summer's prolonged hot spell.
