A body has been found during the search for George Smyth, an 18-year-old University of Bristol student from Shropshire, who went missing while hiking in the Romanian mountains.
Avon and Somerset Police confirmed they were notified by Romanian local authorities about the discovery. While formal identification is pending, the body is believed to be Mr Smyth's.
Mr Smyth had been missing since 23 November in the Bucegi mountains, despite daily searches by Brașov Mountain Rescue. His family expressed their devastation, stating, "We are all devastated by George's death. He was the best of us and is deeply missed by his younger brothers, family and friends."
Prior to his disappearance, Mr Smyth had contacted rescuers, reporting he was disoriented and physically exhausted in a "very isolated and hard-to-access mountain area" with severe weather conditions. Police stated that forensic enquiries would take place to confirm the identity, followed by efforts to repatriate the body to Bristol.
