The search for missing 18-year-old Nolan Wells, a college freshman from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, has concluded after his body was discovered on Horn Island. Wells's mother, Christine Wonsley, confirmed her son's identity on Tuesday, bringing a tragic end to a two-day search that garnered national attention across the United States.
Wells had embarked on a boat trip with friends to Horn Island, a barrier island approximately 10 miles off the Mississippi Gulf coast, on 4 July. While his friends returned home that evening, Wells did not, prompting his mother to report him missing and appeal for assistance on social media. The subsequent search effort involved local authorities and captured significant public interest.
On Monday, a body was located on the island, and the devastating confirmation followed on Tuesday from Ms Wonsley. In a poignant Facebook post, she expressed the family's profound grief, stating, "His father, our family, friends and I are absolutely devastated. My heart is broken for my sweet son who was always willing to cheer and uplift others. Nolan was a special soul, God took his time creating our son."
The circumstances surrounding Wells's death remain unclear, with no cause of death yet reported. The Jackson County Sheriff, John Ledbetter, confirmed on Tuesday that it is "still a very active investigation." Wells, a student at Southwest Mississippi Community College, would have celebrated his 19th birthday next month.
During the search, social media discussions emerged regarding the potential for racial motivations behind Wells's disappearance. Photos shared by Ms Wonsley, showing Wells, who was Black, with three white companions from the boat trip, led to speculation among users. National civil rights organisations, including the NAACP, have since commented on Wells's death, with the NAACP stating on Instagram, "Our hearts are with Nolan’s family, friends, and community as they navigate this devastating loss. Every Black man deserves the chance to grow old."
