A photography campaign, BOLD Wales, is highlighting the strength and confidence of women who have lost their hair due to breast cancer treatment. The project, organised by the Pink Ribbon Foundation, features eleven Welsh women, including Rhiannon Thomas and Sam Gronow-Walters.
Rhiannon Thomas, 36, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2025, described her confidence as being at an all-time low after losing her hair during chemotherapy. However, participating in the campaign helped her find inner strength, stating, "For the first time I feel I look pretty, I look confident and strong."
Sam Gronow-Walters, 44, who has incurable breast cancer and has also lost her hair during treatment, shared a similar experience. Both women met through the campaign and found the experience joyful, with Sam noting, "It was like we'd all known each other before meeting that day, and we still keep in touch now."
The BOLD project began in 2022 after Lisa Allen of The Pink Ribbon Foundation met photographer Caroline Sikkenk, who had previously photographed women experiencing hair loss due to illness. The photographs from the BOLD Wales campaign are scheduled to be displayed at London's Piccadilly Lights next month.
