Cadillac driver Valtteri Bottas has chosen an unconventional route to this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix, opting to cycle 350km (217 miles) from Malaysia instead of taking a short flight. His journey began shortly after spinning out of Sunday's Bahrain Grand Prix, which was held as a one-off at Sepang, outside Kuala Lumpur.
The Finnish driver is undertaking the journey, much of which is off-road and on gravel, alongside his partner, professional cyclist Tiffany Cromwell. Bottas will need to arrive in Singapore for his media commitments on Thursday. On Monday, during stage two of his trip, he spent nearly six hours on his bike, covering 161.91km.
This cycling endeavour is part of a series for Bottas, who is 37. He previously secured a spot at the Gravel World Championships after finishing fifth in his age group at an off-road qualifying event in the Czech Republic during Formula 1's summer break. However, he will be unable to use this place as the World Championships coincide with the Singapore Grand Prix.
Bottas has had a challenging return to Formula 1 with new team Cadillac this season. He is currently 22nd in the drivers' standings, has yet to score a point after 16 Grands Prix, and has failed to finish eight races.
