An 11-year-old boy's life was tragically cut short in April when he was struck by a bus and car while attempting to cycle across Nottingham Road in Chaddesden, Derby. The harrowing incident has left his family reeling.
The inquest into Seth Fulton's death concluded it was "not safe" for him to cross the road at that particular moment. Coroners detailed that Seth cycled on to the pavement after spotting his mother on the opposite side of the road and decided to cross over to her. He was hit by a bus, which then threw him into the path of a VW Polo.
Coroner Susan Evans stated neither driver had "sufficient opportunity" to prevent the collision, concluding Seth died in a road traffic collision due to a traumatic head injury. The record of inquest outlined that Seth cycled in front of the VW Polo before being hit by the bus from his left as he reached the far side carriageway.
Seth's parents described their son as a "lovely colourful lad, independent and cheeky" in a heartfelt statement released via Derbyshire Police. They spoke fondly of his love for wildlife, his adventurous spirit, and his caring nature. The family also highlighted Seth's impulsiveness, inquisitiveness, and thirst for knowledge.
They remembered his "lust for life," his passion for skateboarding and BMX riding, as well as his silly jokes and dancing. His parents described him as a "sweet child that was full of life" and a "so very loved son, brother, grandson and nephew."
