Current breast cancer screening guidelines for GPs are facing criticism, with one individual describing them as 'irrational'. The existing criteria for intensified screening require a family history of breast cancer in a grandmother, mother, and an additional female relative such as an aunt, great-aunt, or sister.
Helen Hills from York stated that this system discriminates against families, including her own, where only one woman in a generation has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Calls for changes to these guidelines have been welcomed.
