Bridget Phillipson, who previously served as Education Secretary, has been demoted in Prime Minister Andy Burnham's cabinet. She was replaced in her former role by Lucy Powell, an ally of the new prime minister.
Despite the demotion, Ms Phillipson has accepted the position of Minister for Women and Equalities, which is now a standalone cabinet role. On Monday, Prime Minister Burnham also appointed her as the new chair of the Labour Party.
Ms Phillipson stated on Tuesday that "It hurts to lose a job you love," referring to her time as Education Secretary. She expressed her pride in what was achieved in that role. She also acknowledged the pain felt by other Starmer loyalists who lost their positions, but emphasised the importance of unity to win the next election.
Prime Minister Burnham said that Ms Phillipson would play a "vital role" in preparing Labour for the next election. Ms Phillipson echoed this sentiment, stating that "uniting together" would help Labour "bring hope back to communities and strengthen British society against those working to divide us."
