Bridget Phillipson, the former education secretary, has been appointed Labour Party chair. This move places her in a key role for Labour's efforts to win the next general election.
Phillipson was removed from her position as education secretary last week by Prime Minister Andy Burnham. She replaces Anna Turley, who has taken on a new ministerial role within the Home Office following a government reshuffle.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that Phillipson, the MP for Houghton and Sunderland South, will be crucial in ensuring the Labour party is prepared for the upcoming election. He expressed his delight at her acceptance of the role and his anticipation of working closely with her.
Phillipson said her aim is to place "Labour values and the voices of our movement at the heart of government." She added that by uniting, they would "bring hope back to communities and strengthen British society."
Despite being demoted from education secretary, Phillipson maintained her cabinet position as women and equalities minister, marking the first time this role has been part of the cabinet in its own right.
