Brighton & Hove Albion have announced the club-record signing of Croatian international defender Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth an initial £46 million. The highly-rated 19-year-old centre-back has committed his future to the Seagulls on a five-year contract, with the option for an additional year, with the transfer fee potentially rising to £50 million with performance-related add-ons.
The move comes after Brighton had two previous bids for Vuskovic rejected by Spurs last month. The Croatian initially joined Tottenham in 2025 from Hajduk Split, having agreed a pre-contract two years prior. Immediately after his arrival at Spurs, he was loaned out to German side Hamburg, where he enjoyed a standout season, making 30 appearances in the Bundesliga and scoring six goals. His impressive performances earned him the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award and a place in the league's Team of the Year.
Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, stating that the club has been closely monitoring Vuskovic's career. "Last season he demonstrated he can play at a very high level and we want to help him build on that within our environment," Hurzeler commented. He also acknowledged the external attention surrounding the transfer, adding, "There's been a lot of external noise about Luka joining us, but he is still a young guy who will need time to adjust to the demands of playing for Brighton and the Premier League. We are confident that he will take this in his stride though."
This transfer effectively sees a swap of defenders between the two Premier League clubs, as Netherlands international centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke has moved in the opposite direction, joining Tottenham on a long-term deal for a reported £52 million. Vuskovic will be expected to fill the void left by Van Hecke in Hurzeler's squad.
Born in Split, Vuskovic rose through the ranks of his local club, Hajduk, making history as the youngest player to feature in Croatia's top flight at just 16, and subsequently becoming the club's youngest goalscorer. He has already earned six senior caps for Croatia, scoring one goal, and notably made his World Cup debut against England in the group stages just last month. Brighton will kick off their new Premier League campaign at home against Aston Villa on Sunday, 23 August.
