Brighton defender Pascal Struijk has had the controversial red card he received against Sunderland overturned. The decision, initially made after a VAR intervention during Saturday's match, was reversed following a successful claim of wrongful dismissal.
Struijk was sent off in the 57th minute of the game at the Stadium of Light, after being judged to have fouled Sunderland forward Wilson Isidor. Neither the referee nor his assistant initially gave a foul, but VAR Neil Davies intervened, leading to the on-field official showing Struijk a straight red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.
The outcome of the appeal means Struijk will avoid a one-match ban and will be available to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League this weekend. Struijk joined Brighton from Leeds in the summer in a £20m move and was making his second Premier League start for the club. Despite the red card, Brighton won the match 2-0 and are currently third in the league, five points behind leaders Manchester City.
